Who qualifies for a UK spouse visa? Understand sponsor status, relationship evidence, finances and common application mistakes.
Who can apply?
The UK spouse visa is a family route for the husband, wife or civil partner of a qualifying sponsor in the UK. The sponsor may be British or Irish, settled, or hold another status recognised under the family rules. A partner with a work visa will usually have a different dependant route.
The couple must meet the genuine relationship, immigration, financial and English language requirements that apply to their circumstances. A marriage certificate matters, but it is not the whole application.
What relationship evidence helps?
A genuine relationship and an eligible UK-based sponsor
Correct financial and English evidence, or a valid exception
A clear, consistent application with the right supporting records

Unmarried partners who have lived together for at least two years may qualify under a separate route — the Unmarried Partner Visa.
Provide a clear account of when you met, how your relationship developed and how you intend to live together in the UK. Joint address records, correspondence, travel history and shared commitments may help. Not every couple will have the same documents.
Where you have lived apart, explain why and show ongoing contact and commitment. The aim is a credible, consistent picture, not the longest possible bundle.
Income, English and accommodation
The family-partner rules normally include a financial requirement, with different provisions for some applicants and sponsors. The calculation and evidence rules matter as much as the headline amount. English language evidence and suitable accommodation may also be required.

Before applying, check that financial documents cover the correct period and relate to the permitted income category. Missing or inconsistent evidence can create avoidable problems.

Applying and avoiding mistakes
The correct application depends on whether you are overseas or already in the UK. Your current immigration permission can affect whether switching is possible. Do not assume a visitor can switch to the family route from inside the UK.
Check the sponsor’s status, relationship evidence, financial documents and application answers together before submission. If you have a previous refusal or unusual circumstances, obtain advice early.
