Spouse or civil partner route

A spouse visa may be suitable if you are already legally married or in a recognised civil partnership with an eligible UK-based sponsor. In addition to the relationship, there are financial, English and other requirements.

  • Already married: assess the spouse or civil partner route

  • Planning to marry in the UK: assess the fiancé route

  • Not married: assess a durable unmarried partner relationship

The visa route depends on your current status and where you intend to apply. A marriage certificate alone does not guarantee approval.

Fiancé or proposed civil partner route

This route is for eligible couples who plan to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK. It is not the same as entering as a Standard Visitor for a wedding.

The initial fiancé route usually does not permit work. After the marriage or civil partnership, a further family application may be needed. Plan the full sequence rather than just the first entry.

Unmarried partner route

A couple who are not married may qualify if their relationship is durable and comparable to marriage or civil partnership. The relevant rules require a qualifying relationship history; living together is not an absolute requirement in every case.

Where you have lived apart for work, study or cultural reasons, show why and provide evidence of a continuing commitment.

How to choose

Ask first whether you are already married, intend to marry in the UK, or have a qualifying long-term unmarried relationship. Then check the sponsor’s status, where you are applying from, and any evidence or financial issues.

Choosing the wrong route can mean unnecessary applications and costs. A focused consultation can help identify the correct path.
