The cheapest and most legal way to live in the UK with your partner (and almost nobody talks about it)

Did you know that it's possible to live in the UK for up to a year with your partner — without spending a fortune and without needing a work or study visa?
This possibility exists, it's legal, and it's still little known: it's the voluntary exchange visa, an accessible and strategic alternative for couples who want to live an international experience together, with legal security and lower costs.
“Volunteering is a legitimate way for those who wish to experience the United Kingdom for a limited period. With the right planning, it’s possible to do so in a structured way, without risks, and making the most of the experience as a couple,” explains immigration lawyer Lívia Suassuna, founder of Suassuna Global, a leading firm in legal immigration for over 20 years.
This type of visa allows one person to volunteer in a social project run by an officially registered institution in the United Kingdom. In exchange, they receive accommodation, free meals, and, in many cases, a monthly stipend directly from the institution. The accompanying person—provided they are formally included in the process—has the right to work legally full-time for the entire duration of their stay.
For many couples, it's the ideal gateway to their dream of living abroad, with less bureaucracy and a much more affordable investment.
Beyond the cultural and personal learning, this experience also opens up future opportunities for those who wish to extend their stay with other types of visas — but always with proper planning.
“Couples who organize themselves legally can transform this temporary phase into a strategic step towards an international life project. What you can't do is improvise — even simpler options require knowledge of immigration rules,” warns Lívia.
