Holidays in the United Kingdom: what you need to know before you travel.

With the arrival of the holidays, travel plans abroad increase — and the United Kingdom remains among the most sought-after destinations for Brazilians. Even without the requirement of a prior tourist visa, many people still don't know exactly what is needed to legally enter the country and end up facing delicate situations upon arrival.

The fact that you don't need a traditional visa doesn't mean entry is guaranteed. Lawyer Lívia Suassuna, an immigration specialist with over 20 years of experience, explains that the screening at the British border is thorough. “Many people think that because they don't need a visa, they don't need to prove anything. But British immigration conducts a rigorous assessment and can deny entry, even with flights and accommodation already paid for.”

To avoid this type of problem, it is essential to present clear evidence of the reason for the trip, ties to Brazil, and sufficient resources to cover the duration of the stay. Round-trip tickets, proof of accommodation, travel itinerary, bank statements, and even an invitation letter (if staying with someone) should be ready to present. “It is important that the tourist can objectively answer the reason for the visit, how long they intend to stay, and how they intend to support themselves in the country. A lack of clarity can raise suspicions of migratory intent,” emphasizes Lívia.

Another point that deserves attention is the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), a new electronic authorization system already required by the United Kingdom. Although it is not a visa, the ETA will be mandatory and must be obtained before departure by citizens of visa-exempt countries, such as Brazil. "It is a prior authorization that, by itself, does not guarantee entry into the country. It will only be another step that travelers will need to complete carefully."

If you're planning a trip to the UK for your next vacation, the best way to ensure peace of mind is to be well-informed and, if necessary, seek professional guidance. If in doubt, seek support from someone who understands the subject—and travel with greater safety and confidence.
