How do I obtain British citizenship and a passport?

For many immigrants, obtaining naturalization and a British passport is the ultimate goal after years of residence in the United Kingdom. This process, however, requires detailed preparation and compliance with a series of legal requirements.

According to Livia Suassuna, an immigration lawyer, the path to British citizenship begins with obtaining Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), that is, the right to permanent residence in the country.

“Normally, ILR is granted after five years of legal residence in the United Kingdom with a valid visa, such as a work visa or spousal visa,” explains Livia.

According to the lawyer, after obtaining ILR and completing another year in the country, a person can apply for naturalization, which is the final step to becoming a British citizen.

Livia also points out that, in the case of those married to a British citizen, this timeframe can be reduced.

“If a person already has an ILR and is married to a British citizen, they can apply for naturalization immediately, without needing to wait an additional year,” she adds.

One of the mandatory requirements for the naturalization process is the Life in the UK test, which assesses the candidate's knowledge of British history, culture, and traditions. In addition, it is necessary to demonstrate an intermediate level of English (level B1).

“The English test can scare many people, but with the right preparation, it's possible to pass without major difficulties,” advises Lívia. Another important point to consider is continuous residence in the United Kingdom. It is necessary to prove that the applicant has not spent more than 450 days outside the country in the five years prior to applying for naturalization. This ensures that the person has actually lived and contributed to British society during that period.

After being approved in the naturalization process, the candidate participates in an official citizenship ceremony, where they receive their certificate and formally become a British citizen. Once naturalized, the next step is to apply for a British passport.

“With a British passport, you gain the right to live, work and travel freely in the United Kingdom,” concludes Livia Suassuna. Obtaining British citizenship can be a lengthy process, but with the right guidance and proper preparation, it is possible to achieve this goal and ensure safety and stability in the United Kingdom.
