The search for better life and work opportunities has led millions of Brazilians to cross borders and settle in various countries. Recent data collected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) indicates that approximately 4.5 million Brazilians live abroad, distributed across continents and different countries, in search of new perspectives and a better quality of life.
The countries with the largest Brazilian communities are the United States, with 1.9 million Brazilians; Portugal, with 360,000; Paraguay, with 254,000; the United Kingdom, with 220,000; and Japan, with 207,000. These figures, referring to 2022, reflect the constant movement of Brazilians seeking new opportunities, but also reveal the challenges faced by those who decide to immigrate.
The decision to immigrate is not easy and involves a series of challenges. Livia Suassuna, a lawyer specializing in immigration and founder of the Suassuna Global firm, which works with immigration to the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Italy, emphasizes that "immigration is a complex process full of nuances, but with the right guidance, it is possible to transform the dream of living abroad into reality." According to Livia, many Brazilians seek a safer life abroad and opportunities that they often do not find in Brazil.
The desire to seek a better life is palpable. A Datafolha study revealed that about 70% of young Brazilians want to live abroad. This desire is mainly motivated by issues of security, quality of life, education, and better job opportunities. "The desire to immigrate is often linked to the search for stability and new perspectives for personal and professional growth," adds Livia.
However, the life of an immigrant is not all easy. Adapting to a new culture, dealing with homesickness, and overcoming language barriers are just some of the challenges. Furthermore, bureaucratic issues related to obtaining visas and regularizing residency abroad can be complex and time-consuming. "It's crucial to be well-informed and prepared to face these challenges. That's why guidance from a specialized professional can make all the difference," says the lawyer.
The United States remains the most sought-after destination, with 1.9 million Brazilians living in the country. Portugal, with a community of 360,000 Brazilians, also stands out for its ease of language and cultural proximity, followed by Paraguay, which, although less discussed, is home to 254,000 Brazilians. The United Kingdom, with 220,000 Brazilians, attracts mainly due to the quality of its educational institutions and professional opportunities in various fields.
Planning your immigration is fundamental. "Conscious and well-planned immigration is the key to success. It's important to research the destination country, understand its immigration laws, job market, and culture," recommends Livia Suassuna. Immigrating is a decision that can transform lives. Despite the challenges, the benefits of living in a country that offers better living conditions, security, and opportunities are numerous.
